How Can Someone Strengthen Their Nail Health?

To uncover the secrets of robust nail health, we reached out to beauty industry leaders, including a Director and an Owner. They emphasize the importance of daily rituals like massaging cuticle oil, while we also gathered additional answers that range from dietary tips to practical habits. From the professional recommendation of consistent trimming to the simple yet effective advice of staying hydrated, explore a spectrum of strategies to fortify your nails.

  • Massage Cuticle Oil Daily
  • Balance Minerals and Hormones
  • Take Biotin Supplements
  • Stay Hydrated
  • Use Quality Hand Lotion
  • Wear Gloves for Protection
  • Trim Nails Consistently

Massage Cuticle Oil Daily

One recommendation I have for strengthening nail health is to massage cuticle oil into your cuticles once or twice per day. Did you know your nails' growth center is called the matrix and is situated under the skin, just above the visible part of your cuticles on each finger? Massaging cuticle oil in once or twice per day encourages blood supply to the area, which will bring fresh nutrients to stimulate nail growth. While it will not necessarily repair damage or trauma to the visible part of the nail (as these are already dead cells), it will certainly promote cell regeneration at the growth stage.

Fun fact: A horizontal ridge or groove on the nail plate indicates a temporary trauma to the matrix, which has interrupted the growth. This will eventually grow out. A vertical line or groove indicates permanent trauma, and your nails will likely always grow like this.

Balance Minerals and Hormones

If we want to shine on the outside, we have to be healthy inside. Make sure you're taking in a good balance of minerals, something that's often overlooked. Nails, bones, and hair are made from the minerals we eat. Also, make sure your hormones are in healthy balance, particularly your thyroid (ask for a FULL panel). Lastly, if your nails seem weak no matter what you do, try not polishing them until the full length grows out. My fingernails split when I use polish on them, but my toenails are totally OK with polish - go figure!

Take Biotin Supplements

Taking biotin supplements can significantly improve nail strength. Biotin, also known as vitamin B7, supports nail growth by aiding in the metabolism of proteins and fats which are vital for healthy nails. Regular intake can lead to thicker nail plates and reduced breakage.

Professional studies endorse the use of biotin for nail strengthening, making it a promising option. Make sure to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any supplement regimen for tailored advice and proper dosage information.

Stay Hydrated

Keeping one's body well-hydrated is essential for maintaining strong nails. Water plays a vital role in the transportation of nutrients and removal of toxins from the body, processes that are important for healthy nail development. When the body is dehydrated, nails can become dry and brittle, making them more prone to breaking.

Drinking an adequate amount of water daily can help to ensure the nails remain resilient. Make a habit of carrying a water bottle throughout the day to remind yourself to stay hydrated.

Use Quality Hand Lotion

Frequent use of a good quality hand lotion can keep nails supple and strong. Moisturizers help to replenish the natural oils in the skin and fingernails, preventing dryness and cracking. Ingredients such as lanolin, collagen, or vitamin E in hand lotions can be particularly beneficial for nail health.

For best results, it's advisable to apply lotion after washing hands or whenever the skin feels dry. Everyone's encouraged to find a hand lotion they like and apply it consistently to maintain nail strength.

Wear Gloves for Protection

Protecting one's nails from harsh chemicals is a proactive way to maintain their health. Cleaning products, solvents, and other aggressive substances can strip moisture from the nails, leading to weakness and fragility. Wearing gloves while doing household chores or working with chemicals provides a barrier against those harsh elements.

By keeping the nails covered, they can retain their natural strength and moisture. So next time you begin cleaning or dealing with chemicals, remember to protect your nails with a set of gloves.

Trim Nails Consistently

Consistent nail trimming is an effective strategy for preventing splits and breaks. Trimming nails keeps them manageable and helps avoid snags or tears that can arise from everyday activities. Cutting nails straight across and then gently filing any sharp edges can give nails a healthy shape and prevent future damage.

It's best done when the nails are softer, such as after a shower or bath. Choose a time once a week to trim your nails and stick to it for improved nail health.
